643 Project Space is pleased to announce, Here/There, an exhibition of work by artist Maria Villote.

As a 1.5 generation Filipino immigrant, Maria's work explores the complexities of colonial mentality, assimilation, and cultural alienation that are inherent in the diaspora experience. Growing up in a foreign yet familiar culture, she often experienced an identity crisis and fragmented memories of the Philippines, leading to a constant search for a sense of belonging.

Through her art, she aims to highlight the cultural amalgamation that occurs when two worlds collide, drawing analogies between cultures and exploring the similarities and differences that exist. Her process-based art allows for a deeper exploration of the themes of cultural displacement, feelings of foreignness, and detachment that are common in diaspora.

As someone who has struggled with these issues personally, her work seeks to spark conversations about the impact of migration and assimilation on the psyche of the individual. She strives to create pieces that are thought-provoking and encourage viewers to reflect on their own experiences with cultural identity. Ultimately, she hopes to offer a new perspective on the challenges faced by immigrants in the diaspora and help bridge the gap between cultures.

Maria Villote is an interdisciplinary artist, born in Manila, Philippines in 1984, who immigrated to the United States ten years later. She earned her BFA degree from UC Berkeley in 2011 and has showcased her work in various national and international exhibitions. She is currently living and working in Ventura County.
